Invisalign clear aligners: Jason Cellars, DDS Huntington BeachWith Invisalign being relatively new to the scene there are still many questions regarding its effectiveness and indications. It has become one of the leading clear aligner solutions and has progressed to the point where it can solve almost all orthodontic issues. So are adult braces best for you is Invisalign the best option to fix crooked teeth.

First let’s get a couple of misnomers out of the way. First of all, Invisalign is a brand, the first brand of what are called clear aligners. So, there are now many different types of clear aligner brands that dentists and orthodontists use and they can all get the same result. Secondly, Invisalign and clear aligners CAN be used on kids, however they need to be worn 22 hours a day so most dentists and orthodontists will opt for traditional braces since it is hard to get that level of compliance from a child.

Invisalign and clear aligners have reached the point where they can give straight teeth and fix almost all the same crooked teeth that braces and traditional orthodontics can. There are certain situations when braces still need to be used, but these are extreme cases, and your dentist or orthodontist will let you know if you are not a candidate for Invisalign. Most adults will opt for Invisalign over adult braces because they are much more cosmetic and they do not want metal brackets on their teeth, however, braces are still an option for adults if they choose.

If you have crooked teeth, crowded teeth, a couple of teeth that are not as straight as you would like to go to the best dentist near you and ask them about your options. Traditional braces and orthodontics are always an option if you don't like the cosmetics of braces lingual braces may also be an option where they put the braces on the backside of your teeth. All these options will straighten your teeth in about the same amount of time, so find the best dentist near you and ask them which option is best for you.

What about DirectSmile club and these other companies that allow you to do clear aligners from home without having to see a dentist? About 20% of the time, the patients that I see in Huntington Beach for braces and orthodontics need very little monitoring and would be okay candidates for Invisalign from home. These patients have perfect bone, thick gum tissue and their mouth already has enough space for the small changes that they are wanting to achieve. The issue is that if you are not a perfect candidate you can have severe recession of your gums and bones, the roots of your teeth can shorten and there can be other permanent negative effects that can't be foreseen if you aren't seen regularly by a dentist throughout the Invisalign or orthodontic process. Having seen some permanent bad outcomes from these companies I personally wouldn't take the risk just to save a thousand dollars or so, the risk of things going wrong isn't worth savings.

If you are wanting to get braces or Invisalign find a dentist near you to consult. Sometimes orthodontics will be the best choice for you. Sometimes what you want or what you dislike about your teeth can't be fixed with Invisalign and must be fixed with veneers or some other form of cosmetic dentistry. So, make sure to see a cosmetic dentist near you so that you don't go through all the work, time, and money of orthodontics without getting the result that you were looking for.
